Description:

RSM Press, the publishing arm of the Royal Society of Medicine based in the West End of London, has recently undertaken a major programme of investment in its journals publishing, and now seeks a Journals Development Manager.

Reporting to the Managing Director, you will be responsible for the development of our existing journal titles as well as contributing to the start-up and/or acquisition of new titles. While the primary emphasis is on business development, you will also have personal responsibility for the production of selected titles.

In this role, you will: 

  • Develop existing journals to ensure they meet the needs of a rapidly changing market
  • Develop new journal ideas and proposals, including approaches for society contracts
  • Develop and enhance our electronic offering including regular contact with HighWire Press
  • Develop policies on (e.g.) Open Access, self-archiving, back issue digitization, and advise and champion change when required
  • Liaise with PubMed and Thomson ISI to maximize coverage and impact factors
  • Manage and develop suppliers, with emphasis on the online product
  • Manage relationships with societies
  • Personally manage the production of selected titles
  • Deputise for the Journals Publishing Manager when absent
The successful candidate will:
 
  • Be completely familiar with all aspects of journals editorial and production processes (paper and online)
  • Have detailed knowledge of online journals, experience of dealing with online platforms (HighWire, Ingenta etc), and an understanding of the technologies involved
  • Have experience of dealing with editors, editorial boards, and societies and working with them and internal colleagues to develop existing journals
  • Have a full understanding of current issues in journal publishing, including new open access business models
In addition, you will ideally have had experience of identifying and researching new journal ideas and making bids for society contracts, and have worked on biomedical/healthcare titles.
