Bloomsbury appoints chairman
05.09.07 Philip Jones
Bloomsbury Publishing is to split the role of chairman and chief executive in accordance with corporate governance best practice. Nigel Newton will relinquish the role of chairman, with Jeremy Wilson appointed non-executive chairman with effect from 27th September.
Chief executive Newton said: "For some time I have been considering separating the roles of chairman and chief executive. I see this as useful in achieving Bloomsbury's ambitions in the years ahead, allowing me to concentrate on the development and execution of Bloomsbury's strategy during a period when we foresee significant change in the publishing industry." Newton said that Wilson brought with him "valuable experience in business and finance within a FTSE 100 company".
Wilson has worked at Barclays Bank since 1972, where he has held a number of senior management positions. He is vice chairman, business banking at Barclays, a position he will retain. He has been a non-executive director of Bloomsbury since November 2005. He said: "Bloomsbury is well positioned to take advantage of the opportunities now arising in the publishing sector."
A&C Black founder Charles Black retains his position as vice chairman of Bloomsbury.
