Charkin quits Macmillan for Bloomsbury

Richard Charkin is leaving Macmillan for Bloomsbury. Charkin is to join the board of Bloomsbury as executive director on 1st October. He will have responsibility for the publisher's worldwide operations with particular focus on spearheading growth through acquisitions, new publishing areas and international expansion.

Bloomsbury chief executive Nigel Newton said: "I am extremely pleased to welcome Richard to our board. He is a very accomplished executive with vast operational and boardroom experience in publishing. I have no doubt Richard will make a valuable contribution to both the company and the board and I am delighted that he will be able to join our team."

Charkin said: "It is exactly ten years since I accepted the job as chief executive of Macmillan and it has been the best ten years of my career. I have been able to work in a company with strong values and traditions owned by a family committed to quality, innovation and autonomy."

Mike Barnard, who retired from the main board of Macmillan in May after 35 years, will return as deputy chairman to maintain momentum until a new c.e.o. is appointed.

The moves means the end of the popular Charkinblog. On his blog, Charkin wrote: "What it means is that I won't have to think of something to write about every morning on this blog. Just for the record we've had 1,137,267 visitors and generated $338.37 in advertising income. More importantly I've made new friends, learned tons and had fun. Thanks to all of you and pip pip from charkinblog."
