Wiley's garden guides
28.11.07 Tom Tivnan
John Wiley is launching a series of compact, illustrated guides which aim to be "quick fixes" for the novice gardener. The Garden Style Guides launch on 7th March with four titles: Garden Makeovers, Low Maintenance Gardens, Rooftop & Terrace Gardens and Design Your Gardens (all p/b, £9.99). Each title runs no more than 190 pages and is illustrated with photographs and specially drawn plans of the gardens.
All four books have been written by Caroline Tilston, a former television producer who retrained as a gardener with the National Trust and now runs her own garden design business. She has written two previous books, Small Family Gardens (2007) and Modern Family Gardens (2006), both with Wiley. Wiley is currently looking at plans to extend the series in 2009.
Helen Castle, Wiley executive commissioning editor, said the idea for the series was to recreate the cookbook experience for gardening with "lusciously illustrated books with readable texts." She added: "Most garden books tend to assume that each reader is a wannabe botanist. This series is for homeowners who probably enjoy filling up their trolleys at the local garden centre or tending their tubs, but simply don"t have that much time to put into their gardens."
