Major plans for Zavvi books
16.01.08 Graeme Neill
Entertainment chain Zavvi is testing a new book offer for its stores, which if successful will be its biggest ever push in the area.
The retailer, previously known as Virgin Megastores, is currently testing a book offer in its Exeter shop. The product mix includes a range of cult, autobiography, TV and film, art, music, sport and humour titles. The range will be rolled out to its Glasgow Buchanan branch later this month.
Gary Williamson, Zavvi head of books, said the product mix was constantly changing as the retailer tests what works best for its customers. "We want to reflect the diverse range of customers that we sell to," he said. "There will definitely be the likes of American Psycho or On The Road, but we want someone who comes in looking for the latest "Richard & Judy" title or Ulysses for university to be able to get both in our stores."
Williamson said the initial response to the offer had been strong, and if successful it will be rolled out across the chain's 127 UK and Ireland branches on a store-by-store basis.
Zavvi is one of the few retailers to have so far reported a strong Christmas trading period, driven by its success selling games consoles. Its like-for-like sales increased by 10.8% for the four weeks to 5th January.
