Gay bishop launches biography

Religious publisher SCM-Canterbury Press is launching the memoir of controversial senior cleric Gene Robinson, the first openly gay man to be appointed as a bishop in the Anglican Church.

In the Eye of the Storm (£12.99, p/b, 30th April) was described as "timely, courageous and revealing" by the publisher. Robinson has been the bishop of New Hampshire, USA since 2003, and in the book he reflects on his journey of faith, his life experiences and the controversy that has rocked the Anglican Church since he became bishop.

The controversy was re-ignited in March when Robinson was refused a place in this year's Lambeth Conference—a gathering of Anglican bishops that takes place once every decade. He was the only one of 880 bishops to be excluded.

Robinson will tour the UK to support the book, visiting various bookshops and events including the Church House Bookshop in Westminster and the Hay Festival. Media appearances include "Newsnight" and Radio 4's "Today" programme, with interviews due to run in the Observer, Church Times and UK Gay News. Serialisation is planned in a leading national newspaper.
