French bestseller to Chatto
Alison Samuel at Chatto struck a deal at the fair for UK and Commonwealth rights in French bestseller La Consolante by Anna Gavalda. The book has sold over 200,000 copies in France since it was published on 11th March.
La Consolante is about a 47-year-old architect who hears of the death of the mother of a childhood friend, and eventually finds consolation with an unusual woman. Samuel, who acquired the rights from Claude Tarrène at French independent publishing house Le Dilettante, compared Gavalda to a young Anne Tyler.
