Angel heads to US for Faber
28.04.08 Alison Flood
Fourth Estate editorial director Mitzi Angel is moving to New York to become publisher of the US division of Faber. Faber Inc, which is jointly owned by Farrar, Straus and Giroux and Faber in London, will look to buy world English rights in titles with Faber UK. Angel will also develop the list as an independent imprint with a "singular identity".
Angel will join Faber Inc senior editor Denise Oswald, and will report to FSG president Jonathan Galassi. She starts in June, and will work in Faber's London offices for several weeks before moving to New York.
Faber Inc's new focus will go on in parallel with FSG's continuing partnerships with Macmillan and Picador UK. "The aim is to take the existing Faber Inc and expand and deepen it, working closely with our Faber colleagues in London to build the brand in a new way here," said Galassi. "Under Mitzi’s leadership, Faber Inc will be an innovative American imprint with a fresh approach to both fiction and non-fiction publishing."
"I am excited by this new development for our partnership with FSG," said Faber c.e.o. Stephen Page. "Mitzi is a brilliant editor whose tastes are well suited to developing and growing Faber's identity in the US and creating opportunities for acquiring global rights."
Faber Inc was set up in 1982 as a North American subsidiary of Faber Ltd. A majority interest in the imprint was acquired by FSG in 1998. Its authors include Pulitzer Prize–winning playwrights David Auburn, Margaret Edson, and Doug Wright; Pulitzer finalists Richard Greenberg and Adam Rapp; British dramatists Tom Stoppard and David Hare; playwright and filmmaker Neil LaBute; animator Richard Williams; culture writer Michael Walker; music journalist Chris Salewicz; and alternative rock singers Billy Corgan and Courtney Love.
