'Strong quarter', says Barnsley

HarperCollins UK c.e.o. Victoria Barnsley said the publisher had a "very strong" three months to end-March 2008, with revenue, profit and operating margin all "well up" on the same period a year ago.

HarperCollins Worldwide saw sales rise to $302m from $291m over the quarter, with operating income remaining in line with last year at $29m.

Barnsley said HC UK's market share increased to 7.9% over the period. "It was a strong performance across the board," she said. "Harper NonFiction had a couple of number ones with Not Without My Sister and Tell Me Why, Mummy; Fourth Estate had the Richard and Judy Book Club selection Notes from an Exhibition by Patrick Gale and HarperPerennial had Bill Bryon’s Shakespeare. Fiction also had two big hits from Cecelia Ahern with Thanks for the Memories and the film tie-in of PS, I Love You."

She said the Collins, education and languages divisions were all up on their performances in the same period last year. "In languages there was good licensing income, and education saw a more buoyant market in secondary."
