Book Clubs: the final chapter?

The Economist looks at the rise and fall of the book club, which used to thrive when bookshops were scarce, but have seen their memberships declining in recent years, such as Bertelsmann, which has seen some of its book clubs losing money "for several years".

However, the article concludes that "there is one kind of book club which could have a bright future: specialist clubs that harness the internet", citing Bertelsmann's Black Expressions club in the US, aimed at black women and Mosaico, a Spanish-language club.

According to the Economist, Ripplewood, an American private-equity firm that owns Readers Digest Association, is said to be interested in Bertelsmann's American clubs.
