Indies gear up for week of action

Writing workshops with Labyrinth author Kate Mosse, bedtime story sessions and a pirate party will be among the events taking place next week as part of the first Independent Booksellers Week.

The initiative was planned by the Booksellers Association's Small Business Forum, and 339 bookshops have signed up. It begins on 1st July; indies taking part include Caxton Books and Gallery in Frinton-on-Sea, which will hold a special bedtime story session. The Hayling Island Bookshop in Hampshire will host a special writing workshop for sixth-form students with Mosse, while White Rose Books in Thirsk will hold a special pirate party and story time for children.

The BA has provided shops with special point-of-sale material to commemorate the week-long event. "We've got nearly 350 bookshops registered to participate, which is an incredible number, and many of them are connecting with their local authors to create great, fun events instore," said Meryl Halls, head of membership services at the BA.
