UK head for David & Charles

Illustrated non-fiction publisher David & Charles has appointed Stephen Bateman as UK managing director and publisher for David & Charles and Readers’ Union. The company has previously been run from the US by parent company F+W's book division president Sara Domville.

Bateman, who has been working in France since 1998, when he established Dorling Kindersley's children’s division in Paris, will assume control of all aspects of the publishing programme when he joins in mid-August.

Domville said that Bateman had "many ideas" for the future of D&C. She added: "[He] is excited to harness the power of the web as a channel for conception, origination, promotion, and distribution of our titles. He and I are in total alignment in our desire to build a stronger, more web-centric business at D&C."

Bateman said: “My motto has always been to expand the market and never to be satisfied with existing performances. It is ideas, ideas, and lots of ideas that drive a successful publishing business - consumers satisfied their needs long ago and today they have a voracious appetite for novelty and they want their desires satisfied. I embrace the changes, challenges, and opportunities in our industry and look forward to working with the very talented and committed staff at both David & Charles and F+W who share a vibrant ambition and enthusiasm for the future of our business."
