Borders closes Lakeside store
22.07.08 Graeme Neill
Borders is closing its store in Lakeside, West Thurrock. Chief executive Philip Downer said that the store had not achieved "viable sales". Downer added: "I realise that this announcement will come as a blow to members of the Lakeside team, and the decision was not taken lightly. However, for the future profitability and performance of the company, we believe this is the right decision."
The store will close in the middle of August. The shop employs 24 staff and the head office is looking at alternative employment for the booksellers.
"I'd like to thank them for the excellent work they have done," said Downer. "Given our strong Borders presence in London and the south, we very much hope that we will be able to offer continuity of employment for those who seek it. The operations and HR Departments are working closely with the store to support our employees."

Borders as a company seem to be going through a lot of changes at the moment, with redundancies in the buying team as well. Lets hope all those affected get suitable positions elsewhere in the company or the industry. Good luck to them all.24 Jul 08 20:51
