Book clubs compete for prize

Six reading groups across the UK have been shortlisted for this year’s Penguin/Orange Broadband Readers’ Group Prize, the UK’s only annual award for reading groups.  

Now in its seventh year, the prize aims to find the reading groups that illustrate individuality, reflect diversity of reading choices and demonstrate the pleasure of shared reading.

The shortlisted groups are Bullingdon Prison Reading Group, Oxford; Laura's Reading Group, Edinburgh; St Michaels Reading Group, Doncaster; The Book Groupies, London; The European Reading Group, Canterbury; and Rugby High School Reading Group, Warwickshire.

Entrants were asked where they meet, what they read, how they choose their members and what their reading group means to them, and to write up to 500 words about what makes their reading group special. The six shortlisted entries are posted on www.readersgroupprize.com.

The winning group--which will be chosen by a panel of judges that includes Penguin author Nicci Gerrard of Niccci French, Waterstone's events and local marketing manager Jo James and Radio 4 "Book Club" producer Dymphna Flynn--will be announced on 28th August and wins a day at Penguin’s central London office.
