Márquez biography for Bloomsbury
Former Cuban president Fidel Castro and writer Mario Vargas Llosa are among those interviewed for the first major biography of Gabriel García Márquez, to be published by Bloomsbury.
Gabriel García Márquez by Gerald Martin will be out on 20th October priced £25. It will be the first full English-language biography of the Colombian author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera.
Martin, a professor of modern languages at the University of Pittsburgh, interviewed around 300 people for the biography including Márquez himself. The author spoke to figures including Fidel Castro, former prime minister of Spain Felipe González, several presidents of Colombia, and writers such as Carlos Fuentes, Mario Vargas Llosa and Álvaro Mutis.
"One of the reasons there has never been a biography is because no one had managed to get to Márquez," said Anya Rosenberg from Bloomsbury. "Gerald Martin, however, has been lucky enough to get to know Márquez over the past 15 years—in which time, he has managed to speak to many people close to Márquez."
