Cape sets up second graphic prize

Jonathan Cape is running a second annual graphic short story prize, in association with the Observer and the Comica festival at the ICA.

The prize offers a platform for emerging graphic novelists with the winner receiving a prize of £1,000, coverage in the Observer and Guardian Online, and inclusion in the Comica festival. The runner-up receives £250. Author Mark Haddon and comic artist Rutu Modan will be among the judges, with Cape publisher Dan Franklin as chair.

Last year's competition was won by illustrator Catherine Brighton, who has since had her first children’s storybook, Keep Your Eye on the Kid, published by Roaring Brook Press.

Franklin said: “At Cape, we already publish many of the best-known authors in the graphic field—Chris Ware, Joe Sacco, Marjane Satrapi, Posy Simmons, Raymond Briggs, Dan Clowes. With this competition we are hoping to discover new authors who can combine words and pictures with the same brilliance.”
