Ariana Franklin has made the shortlist for the £3,000 CWA Ellis Peters Historical Crime Award 2008 with the sequel to the book that won the prize last year.
The Death Maze by Ariana Franklin (Bantam Press) is the follow-up to Mistress of the Art of Death (Transworld), which won in 2007. The other titles in the shortlist are: A Quiet Flame by Philip Kerr (Quercus); Death on a Branch Line by Andrew Martin (Faber); Revelation by C J Samson (Macmillan); Bleeding Heart Square by Andrew Taylor (Michael Joseph); and Stratton's War by Laura Wilson (Orion).
The judges were "so impressed" by the quality of the novels submitted that they released an unprecedented extended longlist of titles that narrowly missed out on making the final six. The additional books, which are not eligible for the prize, are: Last Nocturne by Marjorie Eccles (Allison & Busby); A Mortal Curiosity by Ann Granger (Headline); Inspector Ghote's First Case by H R F Keating (Allison & Busby); and A Vengeful Longing by R N Morris (Faber).
The prize is sponsored by the Estate of Ellis Peters, Headline and the Little, Brown Group and the winner will be announced on the 27th October.
