BIC in new library scheme
07.10.08 Victoria Gallagher
Book Industry Communication (BIC) has published a subset of industry-standard subject categories that will help public libraries "support improvements in stock selection, management, discovery and display".
With financial support from the Museums Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), BIC has produced category headings across the full range of adult non-fiction, fiction and children's/young adult stock.
Peter Kilborn, executive director of BIC, said: "We have long hoped that the BIC scheme would find a place in the library sector and we are delighted that this initiative of the MLA has enabled us to produce a scheme capable of delivering real benefits to the public library community without challenging the value in existing library practice."
The BIC hopes that the scheme will also help with stock selection, management and displays.
