HarperStudio is UK bound
10.10.08 Gayle Feldman
The books published by HarperStudio, Bob Miller’s boutique publishing experiment that gives authors a maximum advance of $100,000 in return for a 50% profit share, are to be published in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Harper UK non-fiction publisher Carole Tonkinson and editorial director Susanna Abbott are to work with HarperStudio, with a plan to publish 25 of the first 28 books already signed in the US overseas.
Miller founded and ran Disney’s Hyperion for 17 years, until former HarperCollins Worldwide chief Jane Friedman backed him to try this new start-up earlier this year. Miller told The Bookseller that he spoke to HC UK c.e.o. Victoria Barnsley at the London Book Fair about possible UK involvement. The arrangement “is set up as a way of getting our books into the UK,” Miller said, but added: “The possibility exists to acquire books in the other direction, although there is no obligation.”
Tonkinson said she was “hugely enthusiastic,” seeing “a creative opportunity,” while Miller said that he would benefit from “advice given by someone with a similar sensibility.”
Barnsley said: "HarperStudio’s list is a great fit with many of the titles we already publish in Harper NonFiction. We’re really excited to be working closely with our US colleagues to take part in this pioneering publishing venture as it experiments with new business models and profit-sharing for authors."
